Hair trends for spring and summer are in full swing! Celebs, social influencers, and beauty aficionados are all taking part with excitement.
After the dreary, gray days of winter comes the newness of spring and the verve of summer. And this year’s spring and summer hair trends are no different than the previous years’— they definitely reflect the cheery and lively vibe of these two seasons.
Are you excited to know what hair trend to master as a stylist? We give you:
Crisp and vibrant colors, distinct shapes, and symmetries - these are going to dominate spring and summer months and the 2024 hair trends will be no exception.
Sarah Potempa, co-founder of The Beachwaver and an A-list hairstylist, tells PEOPLE that hair trends for spring and summer “will see an emphasis on dimension.”
For the cut, she dished that dimension takes shape in the form of layered hair— and with color trends, dimension comes through with the interplay between “highlights and colored undertones.”
After witnessing the subdued looks last winter, the current hair trends are all about bringing life and vibrancy back into hairstyles— that is, without going overboard. Here are some of the color trends to watch out for this 2024:
Being a brunette is fun, but adding a hint of rich, glossy undertones to your brown hair can jazz it up from just being fine to flatteringly chic. Hair colorist Kirsten Stuke considers spiced rum a “simple but elegant color.” She’s expecting this sassy color to burst onto the scene come summer.
And unlike the blondes and redheads, dark-haired women are coming out ahead on this one, as they dodge the hassle of frequenting hair salon visits for root touch-ups.
A barely there pastel for blonde hair – that’s how we can best describe it.
It’s a highly coveted shade— but not everyone can nail the vibe it gives off like a pro. Quite simply, a platinum blonde look is nothing short of ethereal – adding just the right amount of translucent, hushed pastel colors makes the look a bit sassier than single-colored hair.
The exciting part is— salon clients get the thrill of choosing what soft-hued color to use for their gorgeous locks: lavender, blush pink, baby blue, or even mint green. Just be wary that this color trend is high maintenance, especially for women with naturally dark hair.
It’s hardly unexpected that many A-list celebs are sporting bold colors, such as the ruby hue donned by Dua Lipa. She’s seen strutting into the spotlight with her hair colored “in bright red and deep violet undertones”.
There’s no doubt that such a bold color will make you stand out in the crowd but with one caveat: maintaining it can be a headache. It’s not advisable for people who don’t like to visit salons frequently.
Hair stylist and colorist Chaz Dean begs to differ. He considers this 2024 hair color trends as “bit more conservative and natural.” He attributes this to the recent trend of seamlessly blended highlights and seeing “more realistic hair colors” popping up.
As a stylist, you can expect this year’s hair colors to be a bit bold and daring, so make sure you’re investing on your knowledge and watching out for innovative ways to apply hair color. The catchphrase: “hair color that melts like butter” has been trending among hair aficionados for a few years now for a reason.
Just like the hair color trends, haircuts this 2024 is all about understated elegance—opting for minimalism with a hint of subdued luxury. Celebrity hairstylist Ericka Verrett says that emphasis on “healthy, glossy, and effortlessly beautiful hair” will be the highlight of this year.
As more and more women steer clear of overly processed hair, longer locks are expected to make a comeback. As we know, the less chemically processed the hair is, the better the odds it will grow faster. Flattering long layered haircuts are sure to make the rounds this season, as a result.
But this doesn’t mean that the bob haircuts that stirred up a frenzy last year will not be on the scene this 2024. Its popularity is expected to continue. In fact, there are already a couple of iterations of bob haircuts in the works.
The bob haircut's popularity can be attributed to its unmatched versatility. The structured cut and shape of short bobs make your eyes, cheekbones, and jawlines pop out, creating a flattering frame that accentuates our best features while obscuring what we often perceive as flaws.
If a salon client has a long face, giving her a haircut to the chin with heavily layered cuts would be ideal. Ensure that it’s a short bobcat with hairline layers, as well as bangs to offset a high and prominent forehead.
And if your client has fine hair, she can go for a layered bob or messy angled bob — it will make her hair appear fuller and thicker than it is. Chin-length bobs can also be worn in any style. Clients can choose one that suits their face shape. They can wear it sleek, straight, or wavy for that carefree, tousled look.
Full bodied, structured cuts without going off the charts is also one of the hair trends that’s geared to spark a buzz this year. Hair stylist ErickaVerret says that over texturized layers have fallen out of style owing to our increasing preference for “a more volumized, softly textured hair that will help hold shape and give a beautiful bounce.”
She further adds that she envisions “curly bobs cut blunt to pronounce structure and diffused to celebrate the coils.”
As for hair accessories — oversized and attention-grabbing hair adornments are the latest craze. We’re talking about extra large scrunchies, wide headbands, stunning hair bows, hair clamps, and more.
If you’re someone who’s not keen on spending an insane amount of time fixing yourself in the mirror, this hair accessory trend suits you well. Those huge ornaments will do more for your looks than make up– you can even go bare face for a night out with friends.
Key Takeaway:
Salon clients can sometimes get so enthusiastic about new trends that they insist on trying out anything that catches their fancy. Nonetheless, as professional hairstylists, you are seasoned hair experts and know full well what suits your clients the best.
But should they still insist on trying a trendy hairstyle that doesn’t suit them, let them be. Life is to be enjoyed, after all.
