Truths You Should Know About Tape-In Extensions

Did you know that using tape-in hair extension is one of the quickest and most convenient methods to add volume to your fine and thinning hair?

Even if you’re new to using hair extensions, you should consider checking this method. And, if you’re wondering if it’s the right one to use for adding volume to your thin hair, we’d love to enlighten you and clear out some of the misconceptions about tape-in extensions

What Are Tape-In Extensions?

Tape-in extensions are made of medical grade and waterproof adhesive, in which a weft is attached and pre-taped to ensure firm and secure adherence to your natural hair.

The ultra-thin adhesive tape lies seamlessly flat against your scalp, making them invisible to the eyes.

Tape-in extensions are in high demand and preferred by hair stylists and clients for a reason. It’s an extension method that’s deemed safe, convenient, and easy to use.

The benefits of tape-in hair extensions are exceptional, that’s why most women choose them to achieve elegant looks and natural appearance.

How Long Do Tape-In Extension Lasts?

The lifespan of tape in extensions depends on their quality, how well they are taken care of, and how fast your hair grows naturally. Tape-in extensions usually last between 6 and 8 weeks before they need to be removed, changed, or replaced.

Are Tape-In Extensions Damaging Your Hair?

The fear that it can adversely damage the hair and prevent hair growth will only be true if the installation is not done properly or the quality of hair extensions is subpar.

There are more benefits than downsides to wearing tape-in extensions especially if you have thin hair. And, even the downsides can easily be avoided without any difficulty by following some guidelines from expert stylists.

For example, one of the downsides of using a tape-in extension is the loosening of the adhesive tape, causing the hair extension to slip. This issue only happens when oil or greasy hair products seep through the extension’s adhesive tapes or if the installation is not properly executed.

Proper installation, purchasing only high-quality tape extensions, and following the proper guidelines in using haircare products can make wearing your tape-in extensions a breeze.

How to Care For Your Tape In Extension

Following proper guidelines in using hair extensions is necessary to prevent any potential damage. Here are some of our recommendations:

Remove tangles regularly in order to avoid breakage.

The safest ways to do this would be to run your fingers through your hair strands and detangle them as gently as possible. After that, you can use a wide-toothed comb or a soft bristle brush to smoothen out the remaining knotted strands of hair.

When untangling a clump of hair, always begin at the ends and up to the roots. Make sure you are not pulling the strands too hard, or you might end up ripping the hair out.

If you’re dealing with severely matted hair, you can use a good quality detangling spray or a tiny bit of conditioner to soften and loosen the strands.

Avoid putting oil or conditioner on or near the adhesives, as it can loosen them. Any softening hair products can only be dabbed at the mid-shaft through the ends.

If the tangles are too difficult to work through, it's best to visit your professional hairstylist who can help you untangle knots from hair extensions. Do not attempt to try it on your own as you can end up ripping out your hair.

Do not comb or brush the hair extensions while the hair is wet.

Like our natural hair, hair extensions are exceptionally fragile when wet. Applying even the faintest pressure can cause breakage. Sleeping with wet hair is discouraged too as it can increase the likelihood for the hair shafts to break.

To prevent hair tangles from forming while asleep,  always tie it up or secure it by wearing your hair in a braid before hitting the hay.

Only use good quality products that are suitable for your hair.

Be mindful of the quality and quantity of products you apply on our hair. Use organic hair products, sulfate-free shampoo, and conditioner to maintain the health of your hair extension. When using oil to moisturize dry hair, only dab a small amount and only use it on mid-lengths to ends. By doing so, you can prevent the oil from seeping through the extension tape, rendering it loose.

Using hair dye to lighten extensions is discouraged too. If you need to use styling tools, remember to use heat protectant spray as too much heat can weaken the hair prematurely. Do not use a flat iron directly on the tape tabs as it will wear off the adhesives.

Visit your hairstylist every regularly.

It is recommended to visit your hair stylist after 6-10 weeks or wearing your extensions. During maintenance appointments, your stylist will recommend whether your tape-in extensions need to be removed and provide you suggestions on how you can enjoy wearing it longer.

Are Tape-In Extensions Worth It?

Whether or not tape-in extensions are right for you depends on your hair care routine, personal preferences, and lifestyle. It may be a good choice if you want a flexible and easy way to add hair extensions that will last for a long time.

Although it can add length, volume and thickness to your hair, at the end of the day, your choices matter. One thing is for sure, a well-installed and high quality hair extensions can change the way you look and how you feel about yourself.
